ARTIST STATEMENT

Recently I’ve found that I have an interested in working with digital.

Programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are where my main curiosity lays. The possibilities are endless when using computer programs to create it is easy to undo mistakes, and I don’t feel constrained by the medium.

These are some examples of my most recent experiments using Photoshop. The pieces are Bloom and Blast, I have actually a whole series of photos but these happened to be my favourite. The pictures were taken at the St James Cemetery during the summer. I used different filters, played with the colours, contrast and softness.

The poster is another personal project which was made using Illustrator. I do have more poster designs that I’m working on when I can find the time.

Along with my cemetery series I have been working on a series I called Colour Me. I use pictures that I have taken and alter them a lot more then in the previous images. Domer is my favourite work in the group.

Titles: I break in two over you/Of coarse I see you I do (2009)
This piece was inspired two songs called "autumn's monologue" and "the fiction we live" by From Autumn To Ashes. "The fiction we live" is in response to " Autumn's monologue"
Originally I started out with two different paintings, I was trying to live vicariously through these songs to help me get over a really bad time. So I painted two separate paintings to illustrate the different perspectives of these charaters. And they fit so well together, because they belong together. Its a bitter sweet love story. Where one loves another but feels unnotticed, but the other actually does notice them.
If we were to separate the paintings the story is this..
I break in two over you (2009)
Atumn's Monologue
Oh why can't I be what you need?
A new improved version of me
But I'm nothing so good
No, I'm nothing
Just bones, a lonely ghost burning down songs
Of violence of love and of sorrow
I beg for just one more tomorrow
Where you hold me down, fold me in
Deep, deep, deep in the heart of your sins

I break in two over you, oh
I break in two
And each piece of me dies
And only you can give the breath of life
But you don't see me, you don't

Here I'm pinned between darkness and light
Bleached and blinded by these nights
Where I'm tossing and tortured 'til dawn
By you, visions of you then you're gone.
The shock bleeds the red from my face
When I hear someone's taken my place.
How could love be so thoughtless, so cruel?
When all, all that I did was for you

Of coarse I see you I do (2009)
and in response, the other painting's story would be..
The fiction we live-From Autumn To Ashes
You might be just what I need
No I would not change a thing
Been dreaming of this so long
But we only exist in this song
The thing is, I'm not worth the sorrow
And if you come and meet me tomorrow
I will hold you down, fold you in
Deep, deep, deep in the fiction we live
I break in two over you
I break in two
And if a piece of you dies
Autumn, I will bring you back to life
Of course I see you
I do.

Title: Lonely and The Octopus (2007)
Also, my pride and joy! Lonely was my first stencil and the octopus is just always there.
Lonely is my mermaid, and the octopus or "Skully Fish" is her comrad in this story.
Medium: acrylic + stencil + cardboard

Title: You are capable of finding philosophical meaning in everyday life(2007)
When I was at Durham College, Sean Mcquay my prof. and bro:P gave us this hectic assignment. He brought in fortune cookies. The title of this piece was my fortune, and thats when I created the treeheart.
I started off thinking about trees and autumn, and I always thought that when the leaves fall, some sort of nervous system was revealed, it was as if nature was baring it's self to us. Sean and I often compared ideas and theory's about naked forest's looking like a nervous system and that lead to phiolsophical disgussions about life and connections and our connection to nature, thus we have tree heart!
Medium: acrylic + cardboard

As an artist I attempt to express the struggles that we as humans experience on a day to day basis. Whether it is emotional, mental or physical I find that what we go through words alone can’t scratch the surface of how we feel. Those mental battles that pit logic and reason against our emotional nature, dealing with these situations and how we view ourselves in those circumstances is what I try to elaborate through my artwork.

Stuck in my own head again…
Acrylic on canvas board, the title is pretty much the gist of things. More often than not I’m stuck in my head were I perpetuate the negative feelings surrounding my life, here I tried to show the claustrophobia I find within my own head.

Totem of self separation
Acrylic on canvas. When analyzing myself I tend to separate certain aspects of myself, and emotions to make wading through my thoughts easier. But since when has the easy thing been the right one. I’m in constant conflict whether to separate the undesirable parts of myself to ease things, or to accept to whole picture which usually tends to be an ugly one.

Untitled
Acrylic on paper. There is a direct connection between our mental and physical well being. Sometimes you get the worst of both worlds.

I enjoy still lfe working. Like most of the artists my painting based on my drawing skills. I am interested in the turning of lines and the delicate changing of lights.

Pencil & sketching paper/ 8’’x12’’
This banana shows a describing of depth by two dimensions.

Pencil & sketching paper/ 10’’x16’’
The whole setting is in one color, the eggs, the bowl and the cloth are white. They make up a pure gray tone with shadow and light.

Pencil & sketching paper/ 16’’x22’’
The weight of apple is alway a good example for volume learning in drawing.

Agnes Mac

Agnes Mac born Agnieszka Maczynska; Polish painter raised in Szczecin she moved to Canada in the early 1990’s. After attending the University of Toronto where she studied linguistics and theology Mac returned to her original passion and began her study in the arts. Initially inspired by Jean Dubuffet (Art Brut) Agnes continues to experiment with style that closely references abstract expressionism. Her work is typically full of colour and texture and her current subject deals with what it means to be woman; depiction and deception. At the moment Mac is working on a body of work to be viewed at the Wallace gallery in down town Toronto as a part of a collective exhibition.
